Bad Saarow - In a thrilling final match, Finland wins against the strong English team and claims the title of the European Team Champion for the first time in history! In fact Finland only just advanced from Division 2 to Division 1 in last years’ competition. Already in the morning the Finns managed to win the foursomes 2&1 and 5&4 to go 2:0 on the experienced English squad, that is composed of several players with top positions in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
In the singles all decisions were made on the 17th green. Matias Honkala (FIN) was able to secure his point against Mitch Waite (ENG) by 2&1. The following pairing of Sami Välimäki (FIN) vs. Gian Marco Petrozzi (ENG) was decided 2&1 for England. In the next flight to come, Veeti Mähönen (FIN) took the point off Todd Clements (ENG), also winning 2&1. The other pairings were halved subsequently, bringing the final result to an impressive 5:2 for Finland.
Denmark takes third place
In the match for third place, Denmark beats Germany 5:2. Fifth place goes to France, winning 3,5:1,5 against Spain. The match for seventh place, Sweden vs. Scotland, is decided by the Scandinavians by 3:2. In flight B The Netherlands win against Ireland 3:2 to take 9th place. 11th place is won by the squad from Iceland, which wins three of the five matches and halves the other two against the Czech Republic.
Further, the race for the 13th position was an important one, as rank 13 is the last one to stay in Division 1. This match was won by Austria 3:2 against Italy. In the match for 15th place, Portugal scores victory against Serbia, winning 4:1. Italy, Portugal and Serbia will be relegated to Division 2 of the European Amateur Team Championship.
